Founded in 2018, the Department of Reflection is a foil (or reflection) of familiar municipal and institutional entities invested in producing creative moments of exchange (and reflection) between the municipality and its residents, between the institution and its engagement, and between the museum and its public. As a post-governmental agency, we collaborate internally but maintain our autonomy, pushing and interrogating our hosts while creating bridges between them and their constituents and stakeholders.
Issues tackled and topics analyzed by the Department of Reflection include public education, the climate crisis, sea level rise, gentrification and displacement, and related infrastructure including parking, roads, bridges, scaffolding, concrete, and sand. We’ve examined how these concerns affect communities on a local, national, and global scale, crafting systems-responsive dialogues that create new pathways of communication and bring fresh perspectives to important conversations, maybe even leading to solutions.
